After The Roots bounced from MCA and Geffen, the Hip-Hop group signed with Def Jam in 2006 under then-label president Jay-Z. The Philadelphia Hip-Hop band continues to struggle at the label, even more since the December 2006 departure of Jay-Z.

Their Def Jam debut "Game Theory" was sold 204,000 copies in the US, but things are not looking much better with their new album "Rising Down". The group wrote a track titled "Birthday Girl" featuring Fall Out Boy´s Patrick Stump to satisfy Def Jam but fans weren´t feeling the song and it was removed from the US version of their new album.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson expressed his frustration and the disconnect between the group and Island Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid.

"He has no idea that 'Birthday Girl' isn't even on the album," Thompson says. "They don't know we shot the 'Rising Down' video. They just know they approved an (electronic press kit) budget."
