In the June/July issue of "Success" magazine, hip-hop uber mogul, Russell Simmons dropped jewels on getting your money right, dreaming big and giving back.
"Hip-hop is about creating and maximizing opportunity," Simmons said. "It's about transforming the American dream into a living reality. Our "Get Your Money Right' Hip-Hop Summits are about helping young people empower themselves with the basic tools of financial empowerment. With the proper education and information about financial literacy, a young person today can work hard and still be successful, even during the current economic environment."
When asked about making your dreams come true, the 51-year-old father of Def Jam said, "What we refer to as obstacles are the things that make you better. And you don't ever really arrive, so there are always as many obstacles as you perceive there to be. You only fail when you quit, it takes years for new things to come to fruition. It took four years' struggle in the fashion business for me to pull my head up, and my Internet company is just beginning to generate traffic. All the businesses take a long time."
Simmons said that he doesn't believe material things are what make us happy. "I've found that the resources I get are no good unless I give them back," said Simmons about his philanthropic efforts.
Simmons also serves as chairman of the Foundation for Ethics Understanding. His book "Do You! 12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success" was a New York Times bestseller.
