Lil' Wayne was required to give a DNA sample yesterday in a Manhattan court. State prosecutors are hoping that this will provide evidence that the little lyricist is linked to the unregistered gun he is accused of being in possession of.

In July of 2007, Mr. Carter was arrested in New York City after a performance at the famed Beacon theatre. Police originally approached Wayne about he and another man smoking marijuana outside of his tour bus. After his arrest, they discovered a gun "on his person." He was then charged with criminal possession of a weapon and marijuana.

Wayne had two more run-ins with the law in the subsequent six months. He was arrested in Idaho in October of 2007 after Georgia authorities labeled him a "felony fugitive" and accused him of possession of a controlled substance. Mr. Carter posted bail and the "fugitive" charges were later dropped. The latter of the two incidents occurred this past January when he was arrested by Border Patrol agents near Yuma, Arizona. AK-9 Unit sniffed out approximately 105 grams of marijuana, 29 grams of cocaine, 41 grams of Ecstasy and $22,000 dollars in cash. It was later discovered that he has a Concealed Weapons License in Florida but that has no bearing on the state laws of Arizona. He was again released on bail but the outcome of this situation is still pending.

If convicted Mr. Carter is facing anywhere from one to fifteen years in prison for this current mishap. Per the NY State Bar Association, Criminal Possession of a weapon in the Second Degree is a class C felony, Third Degree is a class D felony, and Fourth Degree is a class A misdemeanor. The class C felony is punishable by a maximum of 15 years in prison, the D felony by a maximum of 7 years in prison, and the A misdemeanor by a maximum of 1 year in jail.
