Lady Gaga's 'The Fame Monster' was the biggest selling album of 2010.
The 'Telephone' singer's record - a repackaged version of her earlier disc, 'The Fame,' with an additional eight tracks - sold 5.8 million copies across the globe, according to the United World Chart, compiled by website mediatraffic.de.
Upon hearing the news Gaga tweeted, writing: "'The Fame Monster' was named the best-selling album of 2010!
"I'm so excited for the future, believe work hard, you will achieve your dreams (sic)."
The eccentric singer's album beat Eminem, who's 'Recovery' sold 5.7 million copies to land him in second place on the chart, while Canadian teen singing sensation Justin Bieber came in third with 5.6 million sales of his 'My World' albums.
Gaga also said she will be making an announcement about her new album 'Born This Way' at midnight on New Year's Eve.
Meanwhile, the singer has been defended by John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, after fans of her ex-husband's band The Beatles criticized Gaga for playing a piano belonging to the star.
Yoko told the Daily Mail newspaper: "I think her playing John's piano was wonderful. Because she's an artist, she's fearless and she pushes every limit, which we both always adored."

Jay-Z reportedly bought Beyonce Knowles $350,000 worth of designer handbags and purses for Christmas.
The millionaire rapper went to the Hermes boutique on Madison Avenue, in New York City, on Christmas Eve to pick out a number of gifts for his pop star wife.
He purchased a selection of Birkin handbags - which can sell up to $150,000 each - and other items including purses.
A source said: "Jay was in a private room of Hermes doing last-minute shopping. He had a guard standing watch outside."
The 'Empire State Of Mind' hitmaker spent so long in the store he had to cancel a lunch reservation and instead telephoned the eatery to arrange to have his food delivered to the exclusive store instead.
It seems Jay-Z wanted to spoil his spouse after she splashed out $2 million on a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport car for his 41st birthday.
The 'Halo' singer presented him with the vehicle - which is the world's fastest road car - when he reached the age on December 4.
Will.I.Am finds rumors of a romance with Cheryl Cole "cool".
The Black Eyed Peas star - who first became friends with the brunette beauty when she appeared in his 'Heartbreaker' music video - insists he and Cheryl have a platonic relationship but he enjoys reading stories describing them as a couple.
He said: "The me and Cheryl rumors? Those are funny. I thought those rumors were cool. They weren't true but they were cool. They were cool rumors."
Being just friends with a girl is nothing new to the 35-year-old singer-and-producer, and he admits that he wasn't very successful with the opposite sex in high school.
He explained: "Ever since high school I would like a girl and they would say, 'I see you as my brother.' Wasn't that irritating? But it kept me out of trouble. If I'd had it the way I wanted it in high school, I wouldn't be focused on my music like I am now, and I'd probably have a billion kids.
"Girls saw me as a friend and it protected me from being distracted from my music. It was painful so I wrote songs about it."
Avril Lavigne thinks it is "really cool" Rihanna sampled her song 'I'm With You'.
The Canadian pop singer is a fan of Rihanna and liked what she did with her ballad, which was given a twist when it was used for party anthem 'Cheers (Drink To That)' on the Barbadian hitmaker's recent 'Loud' album.
Avril told Entertainment Weekly magazine: "It was really exciting because 'I'm With You' is one of my favorite songs that I've done, I always love performing it.
"I think Rihanna's awesome, she has great songs, she's a really great singer, so yeah I was excited about the track. I think it's really cool."
Rihanna has said she originally wanted Avril to guest re-record her part for 'Cheers (Drink To That),' but unfortunately the song was already in an advanced stage of production by the time she heard it.
She explained: "I asked whether Avril could appear, but when I heard the track it was already embedded in the music, so the producers already had it that way.
"I'm just glad that we could use her sample, because it became such a huge part of the instrumental that if it were not in the song, it would change the whole vibe of it."
Avril will unveil her comeback song, 'What The Hell' on US TV on New Year's Eve and her album, 'Goodbye Lullaby' - which she has described as "more stripped and raw and a little deeper" - will follow on March 8.
Teena Marie has died at the age of 54.
The R&B singer - best known for her 80s hits 'I Need Your Lovin'' and 'Lovergirl' - was found dead in her sleep by her daughter at her home in Pasadena, California, yesterday (12/26/2010), her publicist has confirmed.
Teena - born Mary Christine Brockert, and also known as Lady T - was one of very few Caucasian artists on the Motown record label in the 1970s and fear of a backlash among fans led to her image being omitted from her first album 'Wild and Peaceful.'
However, her career with Motown ended badly and she launched a legal battle which led to the 'Teena Marie Law,' meaning a label cannot keep an artist under contract without releasing new material for them.
Commenting on her involvement in the law, Teena confessed she never "set out" to make it.
She said: "It wasn't something I set out to do. I just wanted to get away from Motown and have a good life. But it helped a lot of people, like Luther Vandross and the Mary Jane Girls and a lot of different artists, to be able to get out of their contracts."
She was largely out of the public eye for much of the 1990s following the birth of her daughter Alia, but put out the album 'La Dona' in 2004, which earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Singer Mary J. Blige tweeted her feelings on Teena'a death, saying she loved her.
She wrote: "In my heart she's Tina, So rest in peace Tina, i love u. Every girl that grew up in the hood , with her blasting through the windows, Cars and radio waves can Feel me.
"Rest in peace Teena Mari. My Love love for u is forever (sic)"
Kim Kardashian handed out toys to sick children on Christmas Eve.
The reality TV star got into the festive spirit by handing out hundreds of gifts to youngsters at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
She wrote on her twitter page: "Heading to the LA Children's Hospital to give out toys! Thank u Hobby Tron for the amazing donation! 500 toys! Wow. (sic)"
Meanwhile, Kim's younger sister Khloe Kardashian has been sharing her own festive thoughts online.
The 26-year-old star wrote on her blog: "Who's getting excited for Christmas?! I know I am. Every year my mom hosts a huge Christmas Eve party and all of our family and friends attend - it's one of my favorite holiday traditions. (sic)"
Khloe also revealed she was looking at old pictures of her family to help her get into the Christmas spirit.
She said: "I was just trying to figure out what to wear to our party tomorrow night and I started going back through old photos from Christmas Eve parties past.
"Looking at these just gets me even more excited! Some of these pics are really old. So crazy!"
Jay-Z is being paid $1 million for performing at a New Years Eve party.
The rapper - who is reported to be attending the event with his superstar wife Beyonce Knowles - is set to receive the huge sum to entertain guests at the lavish launch for the new Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
British band Coldplay are also said to be playing at the $4 billion resort, with frontman Chris Martin bringing his own famous guest in the shape of wife Gwyneth Paltrow.
Chris will join Jay-Z in the line-up to perform in front of 2,500 partygoers at the 2,995-bedroom hotel.
However, 'All the Single Ladies' hitmaker Beyonce, and 'Country Strong' actress Gwyneth, who also sings, won't be joining their husbands on stage.
Jay-Z's $1 million gig will be just a drop in the ocean for him and his wife, who were named the highest-earning couple in showbusiness last year, earning $100 million between them from June 2008 to June 2009.
They beat a number of other heavyweight couples, including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who were worth $50 million, and David and Victoria Beckham, who raked in $45 million.
