Ultra Nate Wyche was born in Havre de Grace (a coastal city just outside of Baltimore), Maryland in 1968. Though Havre de Grace was home to a thriving African-American gospel scene, Nate - a talented singer from childhood - was equally influenced by artists as diverse as Boy George and Marvin Gaye. Her musical style is as eclectic as her influences, incorporating elements of soul, pop, disco, and R&B into house music with a heavy drum emphasis.

She began working with renowned Baltimore dance music production trio Basement Boys (Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul) in the late 1980’s, and signed a record deal with Warner Brothers Records in 1990. She released her first two albums with Warner Brothers: 1991’s Blue Notes in the Basement and 1994’s One Woman’s Insanity. Both albums were a success in the United States and abroad, with singles "Joy" and "Show Me" receiving heavy rotation in the nightclub scene.

When Warner Brothers wanted to push Ultra into making her third record an R&B album as artists like Mariah Carey were doing at the time, she instead opted to leave the label and maintain creative control over her music somewhere else. She signed to independent house label Strictly Rhythm in 1997, releasing her third album Situation: Critical just a year later. Featuring a more mainstream pop-influenced sound, Situation: Critical is her best selling album to date, with single "Free" reaching the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and remaining there for weeks.
