Before Miami rap got big, there was Trick Daddy. Also known to go by the monikers Trick Daddy Dollars and T-Double-D, Trick got big before Miami acts like Rick Ross, Pitbull, and Flo Rida began spitting their tropical flow over the airwaves. Born to a mother of twelve in the rough Miami neighborhood of Liberty City, Trick (real name Arthur Maurice Young) spent most of his early years in and out of correctional facilities for drug trafficking and illegal weapon possession. When he learned that two of his brothers and three of his best friends had been killed during a three year stint on prison in 1994, Trick vowed to change his violent ways. Upon his release, Trick Daddy began to channel his anger into music, quickly becoming a fixture in Miami’s underground rap scene.

After his discovery in 1996 by Luther Campbell (formerly of influential Miami bass outfit 2 Live Crew), Trick Daddy signed a deal with Miami megalabel Slip-N-Slide Records (Trina, Plies) in 2007, dropping his debut album Based on a True Story later that year. Based on a True Story (his only release to date to not feature the word "thug" in its title) was followed up by the release of his second album www.thug.com in 1998, which produced one hit single entitled "Nann Nigga". A left-field success, "Nann Nigga" rose to the #3 spot on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks index, putting the regionally famous Miami rapper on the national map.

Trick Daddy went on to put out three more RIAA Gold-certified albums in the wake of www.thug.com; Book of Thugs: Chapter AK Verse 47 (2000), Thugs Are Us (2001), and Thug Holiday (2002). Showcasing Trick Daddy’s deep, booming voice and candid lyricism, these albums confirmed that Trick’s early success was no fluke. Standout tracks from these albums include "I‘m a Thug", "In the Wind", and "Take it to the House".
