Slipknot

Slipknot is a hard band to ignore. Their style of alternative metal can best be described as an all-out aural assault, combining elements of heavy metal, death metal, hardcore, industrial, and hip-hop into an eclectic sound often referred to as nu metal. Slipknot is also known for their violent and enigmatic image, with the nine members of the band donning jumpsuits and macabre masks during music videos and live performances to obscure their identities, a practice the band adopted in their early days as a means to ensure anonymity. Slipknot is widely considered to be one of the most popular and influential bands in the nu metal genre, alongside contemporaries like Korn, P.O.D., and Linkin Park.

The band has its roots in Des Moines, Iowa, where it was originally formed in 1995 by drummer Shawn Crahan and bassist Paul Gray. Slipknot spent much of their time practicing in private during their early days, only rarely playing gigs and donning masks to obscure their identity when they did - a tradition that continues to this day, and has become one of the band‘s distinguishing features. Slipknot independently released the album Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. in late 2006, an album that many fans consider to be Slipknot’s first record, though the band itself regards Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. as just an early demo. Nonetheless, Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. remains a fan favorite, and will sell for hundreds of dollars on online auction sites like Ebay because it is fairly rare - only 1000 copies were pressed.

Slipknot underwent a series of lineup changes after Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat., with Crahan and Gray eventually recruiting a nine-member lineup - including two guitarists, a drummer, a sampler, a DJ, and two percussionists - to produce Slipknot’s signature sound. Slipknot recorded a second demo in 1998 with their new lineup, attracting the attention of production legend Ross Robinson (Norma Jean, Machine Head) who was instrumental in securing Slipknot a record deal with metal megalabel Roadrunner Records (Killswitch Engage, Atreyu), the band‘s current label. Backed by Robinson’s top notch production skills, Slipknot made their major label debut with the release of their first album, Slipknot, in 1999. Slipknot’s raw, percussion-heavy sound shone through on their wildly successful self-titled debut, which featured such singles as "Wait and Bleed" and "Spit it Out".
