Pussycat Dolls

The Pussycat Dolls are the brainchild of Robin Antin, a Los Angeles-based choreographer and entertainer, who formed the group as a modern day burlesque dance troupe in 1995. The group rose to prominence throughout the late 1990’s, performing sold out floor shows at Los Angeles’ hottest clubs. It wasn’t long before the tremendously sexy ladies of the Pussycat Dolls began to attract national attention, nabbing a Playboy article in 1999 and a similar feature in Maxim in 2002. In its early days, Christina Aguilera, Christina Applegate, and Carmen Electra were all members of the group.

In 2003 Antin decided to change the group’s focus, reforming the Pussycat Dolls as a vocal ensemble at the urging of Interscope Records executive Jimmy Iovine (U2, Eminem). After a massive lineup shuffle the group’s roster was trimmed to include only singers, although the Pussycat Dolls retain many elements of their prior dance act for use during their live shows. The end result was a sexy, image-oriented, all-girl dance-pop troupe stylistically similar to Danity Kane or Girlicious. Currently, the group’s lineup consists of lead singers Nicole Scherzinger (formerly of Eden’s Crush) and Melody Thornton, along with background vocalists Jessica Sutta, Ashley Roberts, and Kimberly Wyatt.

After spending 2004 and most of 2005 in the studio (contributing to the soundtracks of the 2004 motion pictures Shark Tale and Shall We Dance?), the Pussycat Dolls finally released their first album PCD on A&M Records in late 2005. The Timbaland-produced album quickly proved to become an immense commercial success, moving over six million units worldwide after climbing to the 5th spot of the Billboard 200. PCD has since produced seven singles, among them the sentimental ballad "Stickwitu" and the flirtatious dance track "Buttons", which features rapper Snoop Dogg.
