Plies

Like a chained pitbull snapping at the end of its leash, take one look at Plies and you know he‘s not playing around. The newest Florida rapper in the game, Plies mixes raw straight-off-the-mixtape street style and a slow southern drawl with business sense that could’ve nabbed him a Fortune 500 job in another life. As dangerous as he is ambitious, Plies is one of the realest breakout artists in the industry today. With down-south swagger like early T.I. and ferocity reminiscent of labelmate Trick Daddy, Plies is here to stay.

Born and raised in Ft. Meyers, Plies started a record label, Big Gates Records, with his brother Ronell in 1999. Initially a producer, Plies refused to rap and instead worked under his brother signing regional artists, booking shows, and engineering mixtapes. During one particular recording session, Plies sung the chorus for one of the Big Gates artists as an example; the hook stuck and they kept it in the final cut of the street track Tell Dem Krackers Dat. The track gained momentum in the underground rap scene, and Plies ended up on several Big Gates releases.

After a host of underground tapes (36 Ounces, Certified Goon) and some trouble with the law after a shootout in a Gainesville nightclub, Plies was featured on DJ Khalid's breakout hit I'm So Hood alongside vocalist T-Pain and Miami rap powerhouse Rick Ross. The track gained popularity nationwide, peaking at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100. Soon after, Plies landed a record deal with Atlantic through 305-based Slip-N-Slide records, and released his first feature album, The Real Testament, in 2007.
