Paul Wall

Paul Wall (real name Paul Slayton) is a rapper, producer, DJ, and jeweler from Houston, Texas. Paul started promoting for powerful Houston independent label Swishahouse Records in the late 1990’s along with his childhood friend Chamillionaire (Hakeem Seriki). After a few months at Swishahouse, Paul and Chamillionaire convinced label owner Michael 5000 Watts to allow the duo to appear on a mixtape; the mixtape became influential throughout Houston, and Paul Wall and Chamillionaire went on to become fixtures in the Houston rap scene.

After a dispute with Michael 5000 Watts in 1999 Chamillionaire and Paul Wall left the Swishahouse label, forming a duo they named The Color Changin’ Click. The Color Changin’ Click signed to rival Houston label Paid in Full Entertainment in 2002, releasing their first major album Get Ya Mind Correct that same year. Though The Color Changin’ Click recorded a second album in 2003 it was never released; the pair had a falling out that caused Chamillionaire to leave the group and start his own label, while Paul Wall remained with Paid in Full long enough to release a solo album, 2004’s Chick Magnet. The pair have since reconciled and buried their beef, though Chamillionaire still maintains his own record label, Chamillitary Records.

Chick Magnet was the result of a one-album contract with Paid in Full; after its release Paul Wall returned to the Swishahouse camp, appearing on Mike Jones’ 2005 hit "Still Tippin’" - one of the first Southern rap songs to receive heavy airplay - along with fellow Swishahouse alumni Slim Thug. He released his breakout album The People’s Champ later that year; featuring successful singles "They Don’t Know", "Sittin’ Sideways", and "Girl", The Peoples Champ went on to sell over a million copies, firmly establishing Paul Wall as one of the most visible exponents of the slow, psychedelic Houston rap subgenre.
