Nelly Kim Furtado is a Grammy-award winning singer/songwriter who lives and performs in Toronto, Canada. She was born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1978 to Maria and Jose Furtado, recent immigrants of Portuguese heritage. Furtado’s fascination with music and singing came at an early age, with her wide musical influences ranging from popular rock and rap to gospel and ethnic Portuguese music. After establishing herself as a popular act in the Toronto nightclub circuit, she produced her first demo in 1999 at the urging of Gerald Eaton, a member of the popular Canadian R&B group The Philosopher Kings. The demo caught the attention of DreamWorks Records (Jimmy Eat World, Toby Keith), who added the young artist to their roster later that year.

After spending a almost year in the studio, Nelly Furtado released her debut album Whoa, Nelly! in late 2000. The album - inspired, uplifting, worldly pop with a tinge of R&B - was an instant success, avoiding the mediocrity associated with the recent releases of pop tarts like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Whoa, Nelly! received three Grammy nominations (winning one) and produced six popular singles, among them "I Am Like a Bird" and "Turn off the Light".

Based on the praise Whoa, Nelly! received due to its diverse and genre-bending sound, Nelly’s second album Folklore (2003) set out in an experimental, folk-pop direction. While a solid album and critically successful across the board, it did not sell as well as her first release - partially because its folk-inspired sound did not lend itself terribly well to radio play, but also due to the dissolution of DreamWorks Records in 2005. Notable tracks from Folklore include "Try", "Explode", and "The Grass is Green".
