Following the departure of head exec
Clive Davis from Arista in 2001, Monica left Arista to join Clive’s newfound label
J Records (
Alicia Keys,
Carrie Underwood). Her third album, 2002’s
All Eyez on Me, did not sell as well as her earlier releases, partially because release versions were being widely circulated on file-sharing networks like
Napster - a problem that, while commonplace today, was new to the record industry at the time. As a result the album was heavily re-recorded and re-released by J in 2003 as
After the Storm. A modest success,
After the Storm sold well over a million copies due to the popularity of singles like
"U Should’ve Known Better" and
"Knock Knock".
After releasing her critically acclaimed but commercially lackluster fourth album
The Makings of Me (
"Everytime tha Beat Drop",
"A Dozen Roses") in 2006, Monica returned to the studio in late 2007 (after appearing in the
T.I.-produced major motion picture
ATL) to begin recording her fifth album,
Lessons Learned, which is set to drop on J Records sometime in 2008. Monica has begun collaborating with a more diverse set of producers for her latest effort, naming
Missy Elliott and
Babyface as major contributors.
