Kinto Sol

Kinto Sol is a Mexican-American hip hop group from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Formed by brothers Javier, Eduardo, and Manuel Garcia - three brothers who moved to the United States at an early age from a rural portion of the central Mexican state of Guanajuato - in the early 1990's, Kinto Sol is one of the hottest Latin rap groups around today. Though they're based out of Milwaukee, they're unmistakably Mexican - the group only raps in Spanish, and is known for their eclectic mix of Mexican ethnic music (with particular emphasis on brass and acoustic guitar) and modern day hip hop backbeats. More than a Hispanic version of party-rappers like the Beastie Boys, Kinto Sol's lyrical content leans toward the socially conscious and perhaps even revolutionary. The group sometimes takes a seemingly Rage Against the Machine-style approach to Mexico's poverty and corrupt political climate, especially evident in videos like "Los Hijos Del Maiz" and "Los Que Lucharmos".

The band takes their name from the concept of the "Fifth Sun" (Quinto Sol), an important element in Aztec mythology - "Kinto Sol" is an intentional phonetic misspelling of "Quinto Sol" consistent with hip hop style. Kinto Sol has its roots in local shows that oldest brother Manuel ("Skribe") would put on with the assistance of his younger brother Javier ("DJ Payback Garcia"); the duo invited youngest brother Eduardo ("El Chivo") to spit some verses when the pair began to record, formally inducting him into the group as a member. After producing a series of homebrew recordings the group signed to Disa Records, a Northern Mexican independent label. Kinto Sol produced three regionally successful albums on Disa (2003's Hecho en Mexico, 2004's Del Norte al Sur, and 2005's La Sangre Nunca Muere) before the label was purchased by Spanish-language megalabel Univision in 2006, effectively moving Kinto Sol into Univision's roster alongside acts like Jae-P and Akwid.

Kinto Sol has so far produced two albums on Univision - Los Hijos del Maiz and 15 Rayos, both in 2007 - with plans to release their sixth album Carcel De Suenos in March 2009. Kinto Sol also manages its own record label, Virus Enterprises LLC, which focuses on unsigned and up-and-coming Latin hip hop acts.
