Keyshia Miesha Cole was born in Oakland, California in 1981. After her father died, her mother developed a drug addiction, and young Keyshia became a foster child at age 4. Despite her tumultuous childhood, young Keyshia displayed a fondness for singing at a young age. By the time she was twelve, she began appearing on tracks by local San Francisco Bay-area musicians, and even landed a recording session with MC Hammer at the top of his popularity. Her brother, Sean Cole, used to rap with East-coast powerhouse Tupac. Surrounded by music, it's no surprise she is where she is today.

Though she had begun recording at the age most kids still play kickball after school, Keyshia never took singing seriously. At the age of 21, after coming home from a long day of work at Nordstroms, Keyshia caught her then-boyfriend cheating on her. Furious, she took her last two hundred dollars in cash and drove to Los Angeles where she vowed to start a new life. Within months the sultry songstress was signed to a record deal with Interscope, after wowing music execs with both her captivating voice and candid, soulful songwriting.

In 2005, Keyshia released her first album, The Way It Is. The album was an unqualified success, selling over 1.4 million copies worldwide. Featuring appearances by Jadakiss and Eve, as well as production from Kanye West and E-Poppi, the album does far more than just showcase Keyshia's powerful, soulful voice. Singles like Love and I Changed My Mind charted high on the Billboard Hot 100, catapulting her into the spotlight. In early 2007, Keyshia was given her own reality show on BET, Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, which went on to become one of the station’s most successful shows of the year.

Her second album, 2007's Just Like You, has been even more successful in just a short time. Already certified gold, the album has been launched to coincide with the second season of her reality show. Blending her usual introspective songs about love lost (I Remember, Losing You) with upbeat, club-friendly tracks (Let It Go, Last Night), Just Like You is proof that there is much, much more to come from Keyshia in the future.

Keyshia Cole was born in Oakland, California to Francine "Frankie" Lons on October 15th, 1981. Her mother's friends Yvonne and Leon Cole Jr. adopted her when she was two years old. She acknowledges Leon Cole as her father, as stated on her show The Way It Is.[2] Keyshia is one of seven children. Her older brother is Oakland-based rapper Nutt-So[citation needed]. Cole's first experiences with the music industry began at age 12, when she recorded with MC Hammer and 2Pac.

Cole was inspired by her grandmother to further pursue her career, so she left the Bay Area with a rented car and a thousand dollars and moved to Los Angeles, California. Keyshia had written an early version of "Love" and performed it in front of record executives Ron Fair and Jimmy Lovine in June/July 2002. She was then signed by the president of A&M Records, Ron Fair in December 2002. Cole then started to record her debut album. In 2004, Cole made her first solo appearance on the track "Never", taken from the Barbershop 2: Back in Business soundtrack with rapper Eve.
