Kat DeLuna

Kat DeLuna was born in The Bronx neighborhood of New York City in 1987, though her family moved to the Dominican Republic soon after. By the age of four Kat’s natural singing ability had become apparent, and she began writing songs on her own before her tenth birthday. Around this time her parents relocated back to the United States, this time to Newark, New Jersey where Kat attended the prestigious New Jersey School of the Performing Arts, an intensive fine arts program whose alumni include Whitney Houston and Tisha Campbell.

While at the New Jersey School of the Performing Arts Kat became heavily involved in the local Latino music scene, joining the all-girl Latin hip-hop group Coquette and performing alongside such notable acts as Cassidy, Milly Quezada, and Rey Ruiz. Kat’s broad vocal ability - said to extend over a five octave range, after intensive training in high school - has lent favorable comparisons to that of fellow Latino artists Selena and Mariah Carey. Combining elements of urban R&B and hip-hop with Latin-inspired Dance rythms, Kat’s hard work and unique musical style landed her a recording contract with Epic records in 2006.

9 Lives, Kat’s debut album, was released on Epic in August 2007. Though it has sold fairly modestly, 9 Lives has received considerable acclaim and has produced a number of popular singles. Her first single "Whine Up" with dancehall legend Elephant Man rose to the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in 2007, while her second single "Run The Show" (featuring rapper Busta Rhymes) nabbed the #3 spot in 2008. Kat is slated to release her next single "Am I Dreaming" featuring vocalist Akon sometime in 2008.
