Jibbs hails from an extremely strong family unit, where his parents and siblings were always driven towards making life better. While some were into music, others were boxers. Jibbs himself was a two-time Golden Glove Champion boxer, but he felt that music inspired him more. Being a good boxer wasn’t enough for him; his heart lay with music.
Jibbs’ trip to stardom began with an obsession of getting the attention of his older brother, DJ Beatz, who was locally well known for producing the tracks of Nelly and Chingy. Of course, with the talent Jibbs had, Beatz was impressed and got Jibbs to record a few tracks at the studio. These soon became popular on the local circuit. Jibbs got a reputation for being more than a 12-year-old who murdered 25-year-olds like a pro.
As with all good music, the tracks reached the hands (or ears!) of industry executives and they were impressed with Jibbs’ free-flowing freestyling. Jibbs was soon playing opening acts for several superstars like Chris Brown, Bow Wow, and Young Jeezy when they performed nearby. Soon after, it was Jibbs’ turn. He signed a deal with Geffen Records, (home to Snoop Dogg, Slim Thug, Common, Pharrell, Mos Def, Mary J. Blige) and his debut single, “Chain Hang Low,” was the number one downloaded rap tune on iTunes in August 2006.
“Chain Hang Low” has, of course, become a street favorite with its sing-along chorus, rocking beat, and clever braggadocio. Jibbs feat. Jibbs includes songs like “Smile,” which Jibbs sings with Fabo of D4L, and “Hood,” which shows the audience Jibbs’ introspective side. Jibbs showcases here the age-old adage “look before you leap,” hoping he can help others from getting into trouble the way he did.
Of course, Jibbs does not want to stop only at “Chain Hang Low.” He hopes that Jibbs feat. Jibbs makes it big, too. He also believes that as a youngster he can infuse some new life into the rap world. He wants to be an inspiration for all those teenagers living in ghettoes across the nation. He hopes that when they see him, they are more driven towards their own goals in life because they believe they can make it, too.
