Jamie Foxx
Eric Marlon Bishop
, better known by his stage name
Jamie Foxx
, is perhaps the preeminent African-American entertainer of his generation. Born in Terrell, Texas in 1967, the comedian-turned-actor-turned-singer was raised by his adoptive grandparents, who nurtured his natural creative streak. Never one to stay out of the spotlight, Foxx took piano lessons and acted in school plays as a youngster, eventually becoming the quarterback of his high school football team. He went on to study both music composition and drama at the prestigious
Julliard School
in New York City, one of the world’s most elite performing arts conservatories.
He launched his career as a stand-up comedian in the early 1990’s, landing his first television special
Jamie Foxx: Straight from the Foxxhole
in 1993. Foxx also gained mainstream recognition with roles in a number of television shows, most notably as a longtime cast member of the
FOX
sketch comedy show
In Living Color
. Hot on the heels of his
In Living Color
fame, Foxx released his first album
Peep This
in 1994. A fairly standard urban contemporary/R&B effort,
Peep This
eventually moved over 200,000 copies based on the success of singles
"Infatuation"
and
"Experiment"
. Though
Peep This
was a successful debut album, Jamie wouldn’t record another album for eleven years, instead focusing on his acting career.
After receiving roles in a number of comedies throughout the 1990’s (including 1992’s
Toys
and 1997’s
The Players Club
), Foxx made his dramatic acting debut in 1999 with a starring role in the
Oliver Stone
-directed football drama
Any Given Sunday
. His role in
Any Given Sunday
established Jamie as a serious actor, leading him to land starring roles in critically acclaimed movies like
Ali
(2001),
Collateral
(2003), and
Ray
(2003). His outstanding performance in
Ray
(a biographical motion picture about famed blind singer/songwriter
Ray Charles
) led Foxx to win the
Academy Award for Best Actor
in 2005, a notable achievement in Hollywood.
