Ever since Héctor Y Tito broke up in 2005 on less than friendly terms, Héctor’s solo career has been the more successful of the two, both in the United States and abroad. In 2006 Héctor “El Father” formed Gold Star Music - a record label geared towards emerging reggaeton and Latino rap artists - and forged a distrbution deal with Jay-Z, who distributed Héctor’s music under the Rock-la-Familia label, a now defunct international imprint of Def Jam/Rock-a-Fella. Héctor’s first solo album, The Bad Boy, was released later that year, reaching #81 on the Billboard 200 (no small feat for a reggaeton album) due to the success of hits like Sola and Teléfono.
In 2007, after releasing a live album and a compilation album based on The Bad Boy, “El Father” released El Rompe Discoteka: The Mix Album, his last album to be distributed by Def Jam. The album did not sell as well as expected and as a result the Rock-la-Familia imprint was abandoned, with fellow Latino rapper N.O.R.E. having the dubious distinction of being the only other artist to release an album under the label. Since then, Héctor has performed and produced for both his Gold Star label and V.I. Music, a Puerto Rico-based reggaeton label, most recently alongside Latin American superstarsWisin & Yandel on El Telephono and on Hola Bebe with Jowell & Randy, another regionally famous reggaeton duo.
