At the 78th Academy Awards, he, alongside Three 6 Mafia members DJ Paul, Juicy J, and Crunchy Black was awarded an Academy Award for the "Best Original Song" with "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp". The song, co-written by Coleman for Hustle and Flow, was performed live at the ceremony just before it won.
