If you were to blend together a pint of Guinness, a handful of four leaf clovers and a pipe bomb in some sort of magical punk rock Cuisinart, the end result would undoubtedly be something resembling Flogging Molly. Picking up the mantle of The Pogues for a new generation, Flogging Molly is a seven-piece celtic punk band with enough energy and intensity to keep you drinkin’ and dancin’ all night. Mixing traditional Irish folk music with the spirit of Clash-era punk rock, Flogging Molly’s distinct sound has proven to be quite popular amongst Paddy and Yankee alike, along with less contemporaries like The Tossers and Dropkick Murphies.

Though Flogging Molly’s fiery Dublin-born frontman Dave King seems to be the perfect fit for this sort of music, he originally began his musical career in the United States in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s as the lead vocalist for a number of experimental metal bands, among them Fastway and Katmandu. Though his metal expertise earned him a record deal with Epic in the mid-1900’s, he began to tire of the genre; homesick, he decided to start a rock band incorporating traditional irish folk stylings. Though Epic disapproved and soon dropped him from their roster, this change of heart eventually led to the formation of Flogging Molly.

By 1997 King had formed a solid lineup for his celtic punk band, practicing bi-weekly at a Los Angeles pub called Molly Malone’s. Inspired by the name of the pub, the band took on the name Flogging Molly and independently released their first album Live Behind the Green Door by the end of the year. The band’s energetic live show impressed talent scouts from LA alternative label SideOneDummy Records (Big D and the Kids Table, Gogol Bordello), who soon signed Flogging Molly to their lineup. The band made their major label debut in 2000 with the release of their freshman album Swagger, which garnered considerable attention in the mainstream and alternative music press due to the band’s unconventional sound. Standout tracks from Swagger include the frenzied sea shanty "Salty Dog" as well as more introspective tracks like "Black Friday Rule" and "Devil’s Dance Floor".

Amidst frenzied touring (including national tours like Warped Tour and the American Fleadh Festival) at home and abroad, Flogging Molly’s reputation increased steadily year by year. The band released their sophomore album Drunken Lullabies in 2002, followed by their third effort Within a Mile of Home in 2004. Though the core of Flogging Molly’s sound remained unchanged from album to album, the expanse of the band’s musical talent swelled with each release, with defiant anthems like "What’s Left of the Flag" and "Rebels of the Sacred Heart" and boisterous punk rock expositions like "Seven Deadly Sins" coexisting with the historical folkiness of tracks like "Far Away Boys" and "Tobacco".

After a four year gap, Flogging Molly released their fourth album Float in early 2008. The album was their first recorded entirely in Ireland, and features a somewhat mellower sound than some of their earlier releases. Nonetheless, it has been their most successful album to date, debuting at #4 on the Billboard 200 and moving almost 50,000 copies in its first week on store shelves. Singles from Float include "Paddy’s Lament" and "Float", the album’s title track.

The band consists of Dave King (vocals, guitar, banjo, bodhrán), Bridget Regan-King (fiddle, uillean pipes, vocals), Dennis Casey (guitar, vocals), Matt Hensley (accordion, concertina), Nathen Maxwell (bass, vocals), Bob Schmidt (mandolin, banjo) and George Schwindt (drums, percussion).

In the Whiskey On A Sunday DVD King describes the band's music as a '21st century version of The Dubliners.'

The driving forces behind the music tend to be Dave King's gravelly voice and Bridget's manic fiddling. Prior to forming Flogging Molly, Dave King was the vocalist for Fastway, a late 80s-early 90s heavy metal band, featuring guitarist Eddie Clarke of Motörhead.

The band released a DVD and a full-length album entitled "Whiskey on a Sunday" on July 25th 2006.

The DVD "Whiskey on a Sunday" contains a two hour documentary that gives viewers insight into how the band members found each other and also talks about the members' attitude towards life, events that have shaped their lives and their motivation for making music.

The band released "Float" on March 4, 2008. It includes the band's first two chart hits: "Requiem for a Dying Song" (#35 Billboard Modern Rock) and "Float" (#40 on the same chart). During the tour for the album, vocalist Dave King married the band's fiddle player Bridget Regan in Tokyo, Japan.
