D4L

D4L is a four man rap group from Atlanta, Georgia. The group coalesced in 2003, when founding member Shawty Lo decided to leave behind his past as a street hustler and pursue his musical ambitions. Finding three other like-minded and talented individuals from across Atlanta in the form of Fabo, Mook-B, and Stuntman, Shawty fronted the money for the crew to begin recording in the studio. The group’s infectious swagger and undeniable chemistry soon brought them to the forefront of Atlanta’s snap rap - a club oriented brand of Southern Rap, similar to crunk - scene, alongside other emerging artists like Dem Franchize Boyz and K-Rab. The name D4L stands for Down 4 Life - a testament to the clique’s devotion to music.

Though D4L had formed less than two years earlier, the group still managed to snag a lucrative record deal in early 2005, signing with Mike Jones’ Swishahouse-distributed label Ice Age Records. After long months in the studio with the legendary DJ Pooh (Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube) the group released their highly-anticipated first album Down for Life in November that year. The album - which went on to become certified gold by the RIAA - spawned a number of successful club hits, including "Betcha Can’t Do It Like Me" and "Laffy Taffy".

Thrilled by the success of their first album - which sold well over 500,000 copies - the crew is set to drop another album in the future, reportedly to be titled Still Down 4 Life. For the moment, though, the project is on the back burner as the individual members of D4L pursue solo careers. Shawty Lo recently released his solo debut Units In The City in early 2008, and Fabo and Stuntman plan to follow with theirs soon after.
