Crime Mob

Crime Mob is a hip hop crew from Atlanta, Georgia, with a sound roughly comparable to crunk acts like D4L and Dem Franchize Boyz. Crime Mob’s lineup is unique in that in incorporates both male and female artists; the core of Crime Mob consists of male members M.I.G., Cyco Blac, Lil’ Jay, and Killa C as well as female rappers Diamond and Princess, though Killa C has since left the group. The crew was discovered in 2004 by prominent Atlanta rapper Lil’ Scrappy, who quickly signed the group to his Warner Brothers-distributed G’$ Up label. Lil’ Scrappy’s close friendship with crunk legend Lil’ Jon has also led to an association between Crime Mob and the illustrious producer, further increasing their street cred in the South.

After some serious time in the studio earlier in the year, Crime Mob released their first album Crime Mob in late 2004; though the album received little to no promotion outside of the ATL, word of mouth was enough for it to sell over 250,000 copies. The group’s seductive female vocalists and undeniable chemistry helped to differentiate them from other stylistically similar - and typically all-male - crews, establishing Crime Mob as one of the more diverse crunk acts to emerge from Atlanta in the early 2000’s. Notable tracks from Crime Mob include "Knuck If You Buck", "I’ll Beat Yo Azz", and "Stilettos (Pumps)".

Crime Mob’s ranks thinned a bit when founding member Killa C - now serving a four year prison sentence - was arrested on charges of cocaine and marijuana possession in 2006, and to make matters more uncertain it was speculated for a time in 2007 that Princess was going to leave the group. In the end Princess reconciled with the other members, just in time for Crime Mob’s 2007 release Hated on Mostly. While not incredibly inventive or groundbreaking, Hated on Mostly is a solid Southern club album that debuted at #31 on the Billboard 200. Standout tracks from Hated on Mostly include "Rock Yo Hips", "Circles", and "Wuz Up".
