Bullet For My Valentine

In 1997, Bullet For My Valentine was formed. Well, sort of. Founding members Matthew Tuck, LT Koch, Billy Duff, and Michael Thomas - friends at Bridgend College in Wales, UK - started their career as a cover band playing mostly Nirvana and Metallicasongs in and around Bridgend, a depressed coal-mining town with a rough reputation. Under the name Jeff Killed John, the group released a two-track CD in 2002 entitled You/Play With Me that gained them cred it in the thriving regional metal scene. A number of other alternative rock outfits, including Lostprophets and Funeral For a Friend, got their start in the Bridgeport area.

The band began touring extensively around the UK, adopting a nu-metal sound in the vein of Korn and Linkin Park because they thought it was a popular and commercially marketable style. The band continued in this direction until around 2002, changing their name multiple times (former names of the period include 12 Pints of my Girlfriend's Blood and Opportunity in Chicago) until eventually deciding that the nu-metal trend was losing steam. On the verge of a breakup, the band decided to rename themselves Bullet For My Valentine and pursue a thrash metal sound a-la Slayer and Metallica, as this was the kind of music the band had been interested in playing in the first place.

After touring extensively throughout the UK to promote their new sound the band began to be scouted by major record labels. In 2004, after rejecting a deal from Roadrunner Records, the band opted to sign a contract for 5 records with Sony BMG, believing that the bigger record label was more promising. Bullet For My Valentine released two EP’s in 2005, one self titled and the other named Hand of Blood. The band was noted in tracks like 4 Words (To Choke Upon) and All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me) for releasing thrash music with mainstream appeal.
