Black Eyed Peas

The Black Eyed Peas are a hip hop group based out of Los Angeles, California. While the group is known for its distinct style - blending elements of dance and funk with hip hop in a decidedly upbeat and pop-like fashion - they didn’t start out that way. The original two members of the group, apl.de.ap (born Allan Pineda Lindo, a Phillipino immigrant) and will.i.am (William James Adams, an African American born in Los Angeles) met while in high school, forming the core lineup of a group called Atbann Klan in the early 1990’s.

Atban Klann produced a record on Easy-E’s record label Ruthless Records in 1993, but the album was never released and the group decided to change their name to The Black Eyed Peas and start anew after Easy-E’s death in 1995. Like contemporaries Ozomatli and Jurassic 5, the group began wearing alternative, artistic clothing instead of gritty street wear to further distance themselves from the gangster rap acts prevalent at the time, cultivating a unique image that they maintain to this day. Current member Taboo (Jamie Luis Gomes, an L.A. native of Mexican and Amerindian descent) joined the crew in 1996, and the group went on to release two moderately successful albums on Interscope Records, Behind the Front (1998) and Bridging The Gap (2000).

The group broke into the national spotlight in 2003 with their third album, Elephunk. The album was the first to feature busty and beautiful new member Fergie (Stacy Ann Ferguson, a dancer and singer of Scots-Irish and Mexican heritage), who soon became the group’s most recognizable face. Wildly successful, Elephunk sold over 6,700,000 units worldwide and charted in the top 10 in over 15 countries worldwide. The album is best known for catchy singles "Where Is The Love" and the Grammy-winning "Let’s Get It Started".
