B.G.

Christopher Dorsey - better known by his stage name B.G., or Baby Gangster - got a leg up early on in the rap game. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana’s notorious 13th Ward neighborhood, B.G. began rapping at the age of 10 as a way to cope with the violence and poverty rampant throughout his community. He was discovered at the age of 14 by Bryan and Ronald Williams, owners of Cash Money Records (Brisco, Pastor Troy), who helped him to produced his first album True Story in 1995.

True Story is notable because it launched the careers of both B.G. and fellow New Orleans phenom Lil’ Wayne - it was a collaboration album between the two. Despite the fact that B.G. was only 14 years old and Lil’ Wayne was only 11 upon the album’s release, the duo still managed to wow audiences with their variant flow and mature lyricism. B.G. went on to become one of Cash Money’s most successful rappers throughout the late 1990’s, releasing five more albums on the label: Chopper City (1996), It’s All on U, Vol. 1 (1997), It’s All on U, Vol. 2 (1997), Chopper City in the Ghetto (1999), and Checkmate (2000). Of these records, 1999’s Chopper City in the Ghetto is arguably the most successful; recorded in the wake of a $30 million deal between Cash Money and Universal Records, it went on to receive the RIAA’s coveted Platinum certification. Notable hits from early on in B.G.’s career include "Bling Bling", "Cash Money is an Army", and "I Know".

After the release of Checkmate in 2000, B.G. departed from Cash Money Records, citing financial problems and beef with co-CEO Brian "Birdman" Williams. In 2002 B.G. formed his own label Chopper City Records that he maintains to this day, though B.G. and Birdman have since squashed their beef. Of the four records B.G. has produced for Chopper City, the most recent - 2006’s The Heart of tha Streetz, Vol 2. - has been the most successful, spawning hit singles "Real Nigga" and "Move Around".
