AKWID

Akwid is a Chicano (Mexican-American) hip-hop group from Los Angeles, California. The group consists of brothers Sergio and Francisco Gomez; though they once rapped together under the moniker Juvenile Style, they now use the name Akwid - a combination of their hip-hop handles AK and Wikid, respectively. Sergio and Francisco were born and raised in Jiqulipan, Mexico before moving to the United States; as a result their unique musical sound mixes modern rap with elements of Mexican culture, blurring the line between modern urban music and ethnic Mexican music.

The bilingual duo first emerged onto the scene in 2001, with the release of their first album The Akwid Project in 2000 on independent record company 2K-Sounds. A regional success throughout Southern California, it was quickly succeeded by their second independent release, 2002‘s 2002 A.D., which landed the brothers a contract with Univision Music Group, the largest Latin music company in the United States.

Though the brothers have recorded at least an album a year for Univision since 2002, they still continue to release remix albums and live recordings on 2K-Sound; all in all, Akwid has released 13 albums in total since 2001. Their highest selling album to date is 2004’s KOMP 104.9 Radio Compa, a concept album revolving around a fictitious radio station. KOMP 104.9 Radio Compa is followed closely by their 2005 release Los Aguacates De Jiquilpan, which reached the #6 spot on the Billboard Top Latin Albums index and produced notable hits "Sentir La Vida" and "Anda y Ve".
