Biography

Tracy Lynn Byrd, born in Vidor, Texas in 1966, is a prolific American country music artist. Something of an unsung hero in the country community, Byrd has produced nine major albums but has only two #1 singles to his name. While lacking the immense commercial success of artists like Toby Keith or Keith Urban, the Texan's rich voice and even richer sense of humor has earned him his own slice of fame in the crowded arena of county music.

Byrd started his musical career in the most unlikely of places - a shopping mall. While attending Texas State University in the late 1980's, some of his friends convinced him to sing a cover of "Your Cheatin' Heart" by Hank Williams at a recording studio in a local mall. The owner of the small studio was impressed enough to enter Tracy into a local talent contest; he soon fell in love with performing and began playing the local nightclub circuit, often alongside then-unknown country artist Mark Chestnutt.

In 1992 Byrd signed a record deal with MCA and released his first self-titled album just a year later. Riding on the success of his first #1 single, "Holdin' Heaven", the album went on to sell a respectable 500,000 units and paved the way for his second album, 1994's double-platinum No Ordinary Man. Tracy Byrd's most successful album to date, No Ordinary Man spawned hit singles "Lifestyles of the not so Rich and Famous", "Watermelon Crawl", and "The Keeper of the Stars" - all of which just barely missed the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs index.

Since 1994, Byrd has released seven full-length albums, three compilation albums, and 28 singles. Most notable are 1998's I'm From The Country (with a more mature, traditional sound than some of his other offerings) and 2001's Ten Rounds, which produced his second #1 single "Ten Rounds with Joe Cuervo". In addition to his fame as a country music artist Tracy is an avid outdoorsman; he has published a barbecue cookbook, hosted a number of shows on the Outdoor Channel, and even completed the Houston marathon in 2001, donating his pledges to the Children's Miracle Network.

Byrd is the eldest child, and only son, of Jerry Lynn and Brenda Vaughn Byrd. He and his sister Debra were raised in Vidor, Texas and were students in the Vidor, Texas public school system. Tracy Byrd graduated from Vidor High School in May 1984. His first college experience was at Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas. Byrd never intended becoming a singer. Byrd was never in Band or Choir in the Vidor School System.

Signed to MCA Nashville Records in 1993, Byrd broke through on the country music scene that year with his single "Holdin' Heaven", which reached Number One on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts.
