She lived in Trinidad with her grandmother until age 5 when she moved to Jamaica, Queens, New York.A graduate of LaGuardia High School, Nicki Minaj began her career in 2004 singing background vocals and hooks for rappers in New York City. She was discovered on MySpace by Dirty Money CEO Fendi, who signed her to the label in 2004. After appearing on "The Carter Edition" of Young Money's The Come Up DVD series, Minaj was contacted by Lil Wayne, which lead to her release from Dirty Money.In April 2007, she released her first mixtape, Playtime Is Over, posing as a Barbie doll on the cover.

After releasing several mixtapes and building substantial buzz online her debut album, Pink Friday, was released on November 22, 2010. In October 2010, Minaj became the first female rapper to have seven songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Pink Friday's lead buzz track, Massive Attack, features singer-rapper Sean Garrett and was released on April 13th 2010, peaking at #19 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers Songs chart. Your Love, the album's second single, was released on June 1st following a premature leak. The song peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at #1 on the Rap Songs chart, thus becoming Minaj's most successful single release to date.

Minaj has been creating mixtape tracks since 2004, and appeared in XXL magazine. In 2008 she won the Female Artist of the Year award at the Underground Music Awards.

Onika Tanya Maraj (born December 8), known by her stage name Nicki Minaj, is a Trinidadian-born American rapper, singer-songwriter, voice actress and television personality. She was born in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago. When she was five years old, she moved to the New York City borough of Queens. Minaj trained as an actress before she released three mixtapes between 2007 and 2009 and signed to Young Money Entertainment.

Minaj's debut studio album, Pink Friday (2010), peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) a month after its release. She became the first female solo artist to have seven singles on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time. Her seventh single, "Super Bass" has been certified quadruple-platinum by the RIAA, and has sold more than four million copies, becoming one of the best-selling singles in the United States. Minaj's second album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (2012), topped charts internationally, also spawning the top 10 singles "Starships" and "Pound the Alarm". The album became one of the best-selling albums of 2012, according to the Nielsen SoundScan, selling one million copies worldwide, as well as "Starships" becoming one of the best-selling singles of that year.
