The Black Eyed Peas are a hip hop group based out of Los Angeles, California. While the group is known for its distinct style - blending elements of dance and funk with hip hop in a decidedly upbeat and pop-like fashion - they didn't start out that way. The original two members of the group, apl.de.ap (born Allan Pineda Lindo, a Phillipino immigrant) and will.i.am (William James Adams, an African American born in Los Angeles) met while in high school, forming the core lineup of a group called Atbann Klan in the early 1990's.
Atban Klann produced a record on Easy-E's record label Ruthless Records in 1993, but the album was never released and the group decided to change their name to The Black Eyed Peas and start anew after Easy-E's death in 1995. Like contemporaries Ozomatli and Jurassic 5, the group began wearing alternative, artistic clothing instead of gritty street wear to further distance themselves from the gangster rap acts prevalent at the time, cultivating a unique image that they maintain to this day. Current member Taboo (Jamie Luis Gomes, an L.A. native of Mexican and Amerindian descent) joined the crew in 1996, and the group went on to release two moderately successful albums on Interscope Records, Behind the Front (1998) and Bridging The Gap (2000). The group broke into the national spotlight in 2003 with their third album, Elephunk. The album was the first to feature busty and beautiful new member Fergie (Stacy Ann Ferguson, a dancer and singer of Scots-Irish and Mexican heritage), who soon became the group's most recognizable face. Wildly successful, Elephunk sold over 6,700,000 units worldwide and charted in the top 10 in over 15 countries worldwide. The album is best known for catchy singles "Where Is The Love" and the Grammy-winning "Let's Get It Started". Proving the incredible success of Elephunk to be no fluke, the group released their fourth record Monkey Business in mid 2005. The Timbaland-produced album sold better than Elephunk - an amazing feat in and of itself - and produced two Grammy winning singles, "Don't Phunk With My Heart" and "My Humps". The group toured extensively worldwide in support of the album throughout 2006 and 2007, even performing a free philanthropy concert in South Africa. Though the group has not broken up - the members are all on good terms, and continue to collaborate with each other and occasionally perform at concerts and festivals - the group is on a temporary hiatus while its member pursue solo projects. Fergie, will.i.am, apl.de.ap, and Taboo have all released solo CD's or plan to my the end of 2008.Group members are Taboo, Will.I.Am, Apl de Ap and Fergie

Originally an alternative hip hop group, they have since added R&B, pop, and dance influences. Although the group was founded in Los Angeles in 1995, it was not until the release of their third album Elephunk in 2003 that they found widespread acclaim and achieved high record sales. Since that time, the group has sold an estimated 56 million records worldwide. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the Black Eyed Peas are the second-best-selling artist or group for downloaded tracks, with over 42 million sales as of the end of 2011.
Their first major hit was the 2003 single "Where Is the Love?" from Elephunk, which topped 13 international charts. Another European hit single from the album was "Shut Up". Their fourth album, Monkey Business, was an even bigger worldwide success, certified 4× Platinum in the U.S., and spawning two singles, "My Humps" and "Don't Phunk with My Heart". In 2009, the group became one of only 11 artists to have simultaneously held the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the Billboard Hot 100, with their singles "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling", which topped the chart for an unprecedented 26 consecutive weeks. This album The E.N.D. later produced a third Hot 100 number-one placement with "Imma Be", making the group one of few to ever place three number one singles on the chart from the same album, before being followed with "Rock That Body" and "Meet Me Halfway", which peaked in the Top 10 of the Hot 100. "I Gotta Feeling" became the first single to sell more than one million downloads in the United Kingdom. The Black Eyed Peas were ranked 12th on Billboard's Decade-End Chart Artist of the Decade, and 7th in the Hot 100 Artists of the Decade.
