Swedish singer and DJ Basshunter might be an up-and-coming purveyor of some of the hottest dance music his country has to offer, but he's still a nerd. While American musicians who reference geek culture (artists like MC Chris, MC Frontalot, and Nerf Herder, for example) are often derisively shunned as "nerdcore" artists, Basshunter manages to avoid that distinction - though the lyrical content behind his catchy Eurodance tunes deals with topics like computer gaming and internet chat rooms. Unafraid of the social stigma, Basshunter took his nerdy interests and managed to turn them into wildly popular music.Born Jonas Erik Altberg and raised in the coastal city of Tylosand, he adopted the name Basshunter at age 15 when he began to mix music digitally on his computer in between marathon gaming sessions. He released a number of early demo recordings over the internet while in high school, eventually finding work throughout Sweden as a performer and DJ. He independently released his first album The Bassmachine in 2004, attracting the attention of scouts from the the Warner Music Group (Gnarls Barkley, The Prodigy), always on the lookout for fresh talent. Basshunter made his major-label debut with the release of his first album LOL (^^,) in late 2006, producing both a Swedish version and a slightly reworked English language version. Though the album made only a moderate impression on American audiences it was incredibly popular in Europe, reaching #5 in Sweden, #4 in Finland, and #3 in Denmark. Standout tracks include "Now You're Gone" and "DotA", a song about a popular online fantasy game called Defense of the Ancients. 2008 saw the release of Basshunter's sophomore album Now You're Gone - The Album, featuring English remixes of older Basshunter songs as well as newly recorded material. Now You're Gone - The Album climbed to the #1 spot in England, producing a whopping five singles including "Please Let Go" and "All I Ever Wanted".
